Q: What is Steps for Life?
A: Steps for Life is a fun 5km fundraising walk to help support families affected by workplace tragedy. Created in 2004, it raises funds to support Threads of Life programs and services for families who’ve suffered from a workplace tragedy as well as raising awareness about the importance of health and safety within workplaces and to the public. It’s a unique way to educate your community about the devastating ripple effects of a workplace tragedy and how we can work together to prevent others from being injured or killed on the job.
Q: Who can walk?
A: Everyone! Families, friends and neighbours are welcome to walk alongside teams from companies, governments, and organizations in a community of support.
Q: How will the funds raised at this event be spent?
A: All proceeds from the Steps for Life events support the Threads of Life Family Support Program by providing access to trained family members who offer one-on-one peer support to families affected by a workplace tragedy, development of regional family forums and sending families to these forums as well as production of a quarterly newsletter, Threads.
Q: Why is there a registration fee?
A: A registration fee is charged to help offset the costs to run the event which includes food, T-shirts and other logistics. This allows the money raised from the walk to go directly to the Threads of Life family support programs. The fee is $15/adult, $10/youth or senior or $30/family of two adults and four children. Youth are 14 to 18 years of age. A participant over 65 years of age is considered to be a senior. Seniors can self-declare their eligibility for the discounted rate. No verification is required.
Q: Due to physical restrictions I can’t walk in the event, but I want to help and participate. How does the donation work in that case?
A: Anyone who attends our event is considered a participant, whether you walk all, part or none of the 5 km route. There is no formal tracking of time. The event is to bring people together for fun and to raise the awareness about injury prevention. Any donation is welcome.
Q: Is there a method for an individual (or group) to walk in memory of a named worker? In my company’s case, I think I could get better funding/participation if the walk was in memory of our own worker who died on the job, and was advertised as such within the company? Is a sign with his name on it available through the organization or would we have to make our own and would we be allowed to carry it?
A: Groups are encouraged to walk in memory of family members and co-workers. You could use our Adopt-a-Walker program and sponsor a walker. You can also create a in memorypage in honour of your loved on www.canadahelps.org giving pages and direct your supporters to donate online to your giving page We can arrange to have a photo/sign that the walker can wear during the walk.
If your family would like to honour your loved one as part of your local walk, you can purchase a memory lane sign for $100.00. Your sign will be included in the memory lane which honours other family members that were killed or injured or who were diagnosed with an occupational disease. Please contact us for more information.
